The Great War resulted in more than 40 million casualties; soldiers were originally volunteers but were increasingly conscripted into service. War poets such as Owen describe dulce et decorum est essays intense horror of being a solider in the trenches. People who stayed home were blissfully unaware of the sufferings of the soldiers at the front line. They stayed in their safe homes swallowing the propaganda fed to them by the government, dulce et decorum est essays, telling the younger generations stories of the honour and bravery of the battlefield.

The poem "Dulce et Decorum" addresses the issue of propaganda and the horror suffered. The poem effectively delivers the messages "Don't lie to the public through propaganda" and "The War was the pointless killing of the innocent. This and the fact the first stanza is in first person causes the reader to feel as if he or she is experiencing war firsthand. Owen incorporates specific imagery to into the poem in order to introduce the reader to the chaotic world of war. Owen opens by saying that dulce et decorum est essays soldiers are "bent double, dulce et decorum est essays. Moreover, Owen describes the soldiers as being like "old-beggars. Order custom essay Dulce et Decorum Est with free plagiarism report.

This a peculiar term to use since most the soldiers were young men when they enlisted; Owen's reason for using this simile is to demonstrate the way war ages soldiers both physically and emotionally. He also compares the soldiers to "hags" dulce et decorum est essays word that brings to mind disfigurement, and thus could act as a possible reference to the mutilation of bodies so often encountered in war. Additionally, Owen describes the soldiers as being "drunk with fatigue" which seems especially significant because of the suggestion of dulce et decorum est essays of inebriation as a form of escape from reality, the only method of escape available to them.

The second Stanza of the poem signifies a major transitional point in the poem, breaking down the structure and snapping the reader into a sense of panic that is similar to the fear experienced on the battlefield. Owen opens the stanza with the words "Gas! Interestingly, Owen describes the soldiers experience as an "ecstasy of fumbling. The use of the word "ecstasy" to describe an undoubtedly horrific experience shows Owens recognition and disgust at the aesthticization of war and death commonly utilized by the government at the time. Owen uses words such as "clumsy", "stumbling" and "flound'ring" to stress the immediacy and emergency of the state in which the soldiers find themselves.

One gets the sense that most, if not all, dulce et decorum est essays, choreographed instructions and drills of procedures for this kind of emergency are discarded and that the soldiers frantically improvise to do what they can to survive. Furthermore, the ellipsis in this stanza seems vital in the understanding the poem. This is because it represents the passage of time between the frantic fumbling for the gas masks and Owen's viewing of a man "drowning" in a "sea" of gas, struggling to survive, the use of "sea" and "drowning" conveys the image of the body thrashing as one would when drowning. The third stanza of the poem is the shortest, but in some ways, it is the most vivid. Owen describes how he sees this man "in all dreams"; this is characteristic of the ongoing trauma that so many soldiers experience not only during the war, but after the war as well.

The narrator describes himself as experiencing this repeatedly, watching this man, yet remaining "helpless". This illustrates Owen's frustration, and perhaps guilt, at his not being able to do anything to save this man. Owen goes on to say that the man "plunges at me"; the man knows he is going to die, because try as he might he is aware that there is nothing to be done. It is clear that Owen is haunted by this image based on his vivid description of the man as "guttering, choking and drowning. The man slow and futile struggle to survive continues to disturb Owen for long after the incident has passed. The fourth and final stanza of the poem marks the first time that Owen employs the second person, by using the word "you.

He also continues with his use of descriptive imagery by describing the man as having "white eyes writhing in his face. Owen goes on to say that the soldiers have "innocent tongues" to further portray the injustice of soldiers killed in battle and the governments' evil for allowing the war to continue. The last stanza, especially the ending, read as if it is a final plea to the reader. Owen says that if the reader were able to truly experience the horrors of fighting in battle, he or she would never promote or glorify war to the future generations. This plea represents a reworking of the title of the poem, which literally translates from Latin into "How sweet it is to die for your country.

If when reading the poem the reader interprets the title literally, by the end of the poem it is clear that Owen uses the title as a tool for making an ironic statement instead. Throughout the poem the reader is shown vivid imagery describing war which can effectively fill one with anger, pity, sadness or even satisfaction that at least someone is speaking the truth. For me personally it makes me sad. Owen speaking from first hand experience of a soldier sent to the front line, hurls pain in to the reader's face, causing the reader to feel both pity and guilt for the crimes of war. The Lotterya short story by Shirley Jackson, developed the themes of adherence to meaningless the lottery essays, parenting and scapegoating. The broad aftermath and the negative responses of the readers who did not see the line between fiction and reality prove that the plot of the short story The Lottery by Jackson reflects the real problems of the modern community. The plot of the story depicts a two hours lottery in a small town which finishes with a ritualistic death ceremony of stoning the unlucky participant as a sacrifice for ensuring a better harvest. At the beginning of the short story, the village children walk around collecting stones. Summers who runs the lottery mixes the slips of paper in a black box, checks if everyone is in place and invites the heads of the families to draw the papers.

When it clears out that Bill Hutchinson gets the unlucky slip, his wife Tessie starts protesting saying that her husband had not enough time for making his choice and the lottery is not fair. Then, each member of the Hutchinsons family selects a slip of paper, and Tessie draws a slip with a black dot on it. Then, the villagers throw their stones into Tessie as a part of their death ritual. The fact that Tessie does not question the rite itself, but protests the lottery essays the choice of her family emphasizes the idea of adherence to tradition as the major theme of the short story. The rite is regarded as sacred and the idea of doubting it does not occur to anybody.

When Mrs. Adams admits that the ritual of the lottery has already been abandoned in other villages, the lottery essays, Warner as the eldest man in this community answers that giving up the rite can cause only troubles. For instance, the Nazis scapegoated the Jewish people, proclaiming them the the lottery essays of their troubles. Regardless of the current societal progress, modern people frequently scapegoat sexual and ethnical minorities, blaming them for the current moral decay and other social problems, the lottery essays. The social phenomenon of scapegoating is rooted deep in public consciousness and tradition according to which the dominating social group looks for the opportunities of self-affirmation and shifting the responsibility for their problems on the others.

Though the ritual of stoning to death has certain historical basis, its meaning is rather symbolical and should not be taken literally by modern readers. The examples of scapegoating the others, including the limited rights of the lottery essays for finding a good job and the so-called glass ceiling due to which women receive lower salaries than men doing the same job and have lower chances for the lottery essays promotion clearly represent the phenomenon of scapegoating in modern community. After the short story was published in The New Yorker inthe author received hundreds of hostile letters from the lottery essays readers objecting to the brutal ending of the story, the lottery essays.

The debates concerning the actual location of these rites prove that the line between the fiction and reality as perceived by the readers appeared to be unclear. Hypocritically concealing their fear of becoming a scapegoat, not feeling empathy with Tessie Hutchinson who becomes a victim and not having moral strength and common sense to abandon the meaningless rite, the characters of the short story have a strong resemblance to modern readers, the lottery essays. Thus, the plot of the short story can be regarded as the exaggerated reflection of the phenomenon of scapegoating as the imaginary solution the lottery essays the real problems of the modern community.

Corporal Punishment Argument Essay ( Words) - blogger.com

Corporal punishment is the act of using physical force to punish a student for wrongdoing. It might involve a ruler across the back of the hand or a cane to the rear. Corporal punishment has since been outlawed as a cruel and unusual punishment, argumentative essay on corporal punishment. In this essay, I explore the for and against of implementing corporal punishment within education. One reason to bring back corporal punishment is to give power back to teachers again. Teaching staff often struggle to chastise students because current punishments have no intimidation power. A lack of corporal punishment leaves teachers powerless to prevent bad behavior.

On the other hand, corporal punishment often causes injuries and trauma unnecessarily. Many acts of corporal punishment leave visible marks and bruises. The mental anguish, particularly for vulnerable students, argumentative essay on corporal punishment, can last a lifetime. It can lead directly to lifelong mental problems. There are also studies showing corporal punishment has no effect on bad behavior. They demonstrate the behavior altering effects is actually trauma coming to the surface. This can cause chronic low confidence and low self-esteem. Corporal punishment is a viable alternative to suspension. Teachers do differ in how hard they hit a student. This leads to an uneven system whereby the severity of the punishment largely revolves argumentative essay on corporal punishment luck.

When a student argumentative essay on corporal punishment punished severely, parents often have to leave work to collect them and take them home again. Constant call-outs could lead to a parent losing their job for being unreliable. It can cause a great deal of damage to a family. Corporal punishment stops this from happening because it places the trust in the hands of the teachers. Sexual abuse is a major topic in schools and parents are rightly worried about the chances of this abuse manifesting itself. Abuse comes in many different forms. A male teacher could touch a female student on the breast and claim he was meant to touch her on the shoulder.

All corporal punishment does is increase the likelihood of sexual abuse occurring. These are the main arguments for and against corporal punishment. They discuss the practical aspects and the potential flaws of the system. I believe corporal punishment is a flawed system and there are superior alternatives to argumentative essay on corporal punishment, such as expulsion and community service. What Is A Closing Argument In An Essay?

So much is at stake in writing a conclusion. This is, after all, ending an essay, your last chance to persuade your readers to your point of view, ending an essay impress yourself upon ending an essay as a writer and thinker. And the impression you create in your conclusion will shape the impression that stays with your readers after they've finished the essay. The end of an essay should therefore convey a sense of completeness and closure as well as a sense of the lingering possibilities of the topic, its larger meaning, its implications: the final paragraph should close the discussion without closing it off, ending an essay.

To establish a sense of closure, you might do one or more of the following:. To close the discussion without closing it off, you might do one or more of the following:. To establish a sense of closure, you might do one or more of the following: Conclude by linking the last paragraph to the first, ending an essay, perhaps by reiterating a word or phrase you used at the beginning.

Conclude with a sentence composed mainly of one-syllable words. Simple language can help create an effect of understated drama. Conclude with a sentence that's compound or parallel in structure; such sentences can establish a sense of balance or order that may feel just right at the end of a complex discussion. To close the discussion ending an essay closing it off, you might do one or more of the following: Conclude with a quotation from or reference to a primary or secondary source, one that amplifies your main point or puts it in a different perspective.

A ending an essay from, say, the novel or poem you're writing about can add texture ending an essay specificity to your discussion; a critic or scholar ending an essay help confirm or complicate your final point. For example, you might conclude an essay on the idea of home in James Joyce's short story collection, Dublinerswith information about Joyce's own complex feelings towards Dublin, his home. Or you might end with a biographer's statement about Joyce's attitude toward Dublin, which could illuminate his characters' responses to the city. Just be cautious, especially about using secondary material: make sure that you get the last word. Conclude by setting your discussion into a different, perhaps larger, context, ending an essay.

For example, you might end an essay on nineteenth-century muckraking journalism by linking it to a current news magazine program like 60 Minutes, ending an essay. Conclude by redefining one of the key terms of your argument. For example, an essay on Marx's treatment of the conflict between wage labor and capital might begin with Marx's claim that the "capitalist economy is. a gigantic enterprise of dehumanization "; the essay might end by suggesting that Marxist analysis is itself dehumanizing because it construes everything in economic -- rather than moral or ethical-- terms. Conclude by considering the implications of your argument or analysis or discussion. What does your argument imply, or involve, or suggest? For example, an essay on the novel Ambiguous Adventureby the Senegalese writer Cheikh Hamidou Kane, might open with the idea that the protagonist's development suggests Kane's belief in the need to integrate Western materialism and Sufi spirituality in modern Senegal.

The conclusion might make the new but related point that the novel on the whole suggests that such an integration is or isn't possible. Finally, some advice on how not to end an essay: Don't simply summarize your essay. A brief summary of your argument may be useful, especially if your essay is long--more than ten pages or so. But shorter essays tend not to require a restatement of your main ideas. Avoid phrases like "in conclusion," "to conclude," "in summary," and "to sum up. But readers can see, by the tell-tale compression of the pages, when an essay is about to end. You'll irritate your audience if you belabor the obvious. Resist the urge to apologize. If you've immersed yourself in your subject, you now know a good deal more about it than you can possibly include in a five- or ten- or page essay.

As a result, by the time you've finished writing, you may be having some doubts about what you've produced. And if you haven't immersed yourself in your subject, you may be feeling even more doubtful about your essay as you approach the conclusion. Repress those doubts. Don't undercut your authority by saying things like, "this is just one approach to the subject; there may be other, better approaches.
